SNAI was established in 1929 during the TNAI Annual Conference in Madras. Miss L. Rina  Jeans, Nursing Superintendent, Government General Hospital, Madras, was the first Honorary Organizing Secretary of SNAI. The pioneer unit of SNA
 was established in the General Hospital, Madras. The first SNA annual Conference was held in Delhi in November 1932. The first one-day SNA Conference was held in 1951, and the first Biennial SNA Conference was held at Nagpur in 1961.

Essentially, a Student Nurses Association (SNA) in a nursing college is a student-led organization designed to:

• Promote Professional Growth:
  • It helps nursing students develop the skills and knowledge needed for their careers.
  • It encourages ethical behavior and a strong sense of professionalism.  
• Foster Community and Leadership:
  • It creates a supportive environment for students to connect.
  • It provides students with opportunities to develop leadership skills.  
• Enhance the Student Experience:
  • It organizes activities that supplement classroom learning, such as workshops, seminars, and community outreach projects.  
  • It facilitates social and cultural events.
• Support the Nursing Profession:
  • It encourages students to uphold the values and standards of the nursing profession.
  • It helps to create a positive attitude towards the nursing profession.
• Provide extracurricular activities:
  • It provides students with the opportunity to participate in intercollegiate activities and attend national and regional conferences.
